New Jack Swing Hall Of Fame:
The Gyrlz
The Gyrlz were essentially the first female New Jack Swing group (sometimes referred to New "Jill" Swing. Signed to Uptown Records, their sole album featured production by Kyle West and Teddy Riley, and spawned the singles "If It's Games You're Playing," "Jam Jam (If You Can)" and "Wish You Were Here."
During the historic 1988-1989 New Edition Heart Break Tour, they sang backup for Al B. Sure! and opened as their own act as well. One member of this group is a cousin of New Edition member Ronnie DeVoe.
After splitting up, Terri, Monica, and Tara briefly went separate ways. Terri was part of the group Key West, an act produced mainly by Kyle West and Al B. Sure! that never had its album released. Then by the early 1990s, the Gyrlz reincarnated as a duo named Terri & Monica, with Terri becoming their manager - the style of this music was Hip-Hop/Soul. Since then, the members have gone quiet - but Jarrell Mason of NJS4E/The Time Machine interviewed the group in 2007; the audio from the interview can be found on in the Time Machine section.
Copies of the Gyrlz' debut album are extrememely rare, and can easily sell form over $100.
