New Jack Swing Hall Of Fame:
Today
Headed by lead singer Big Bub, this quintessential New Jack quartet from Englewood, New Jersey scored with two major urban hits: "Him Or Me" and "Why You Wanna Get Funky (On Me)." Today was a part of Motown's revival during the New Jack Era along with The Boys, The Good Girls, Johnny Gill and later, Boyz II Men. Today was a group closely affiliated with Gene Griffin, Teddy Riley, et. al. The names of its individual members are Frederick Lee "Bubba" Drakeford, Larry Singletary, Wesley Adams, and Larry McCain.
Before becoming Today, the group had a different lineup (although Big Bub was a part of this group) and it was called The Gents. Interestingly enough, future G.R. Productions member Bernard Belle was a part of this group. Upon scoring a meeting with Teddy Riley circa 1987, he helped them get signed to MCA, where they were subsequently moved to Motown upon MCA's purchase of the legendary label.
Big Bub went on to record as a solo artist, releasing Comin' At Cha in 1992, Timeless in 1997, and Never Too Late in 2000. In 2008, Big Bub returned with Tug Of War, and is rumored to be releasing a gospel set in 2009.
