New Jack Swing Hall Of Fame:
Wrecks 'N' Effect

In late 1989, Teddy Riley and his squad of producers released their manifesto of music industry domination through "New Jack Swing," the ultra-hip debut single by Wrecks 'N' Effect which consisted of Markell Riley (Teddy's younger brother), lead rapper Aqil Davidson, and the late Brandon "B. Doggs" Mitchell. Their first album was a fairly solid New Jack Affair which featured a lucsious slow-rap called "Juicy" (which sparkingly interpolated Mtume's "Juicy Fruit") and a posse cut called "Friends To The End" which featured an appearance by the RedHead Kingpin.

And Markell Riley was calling himself "Marky Mark" before Mark Whalberg did.

Then in 1992, Wreckx 'N' Effect dropped what might be considered New Jack Swing last, last hurrah ("Remember The Time" by Michael Jackson should be considered New Jack Swing proper's grand finale), and that song was "Rumpshaker."

After "Rumpshaker," Wreckx 'N' Effect were not able to duplicate that monster success again, but Aqil did appear on a few Bobby Brown cuts afterward. The group attempted a comeback album in 1996 to little fanfare.

Beginning in the mid 00's, Aqil re-emerged as the independent artist EmperA whose Myspace can be reached here. An interview with Aqil conducted during NJS4E's time in NYC during the 2007 Hip-Hop Honors can be viewed below:
