Michael Jackson tributes, New Jack Swing and more at 2009 BET Awards
June 29th, 2009

The 2009 BET Awards were overhauled in quick fashion after the devastating news of Michael Jackson's passing swept the globe last Thursday, June 25th. It can be safely said that the overhauled show contained special moments that communicated the pride and true love felt for Michael by the Black music industry - it is perhaps best summed up by Jamie Foxx when he said early on in the evening, "we want to celebrate this Black man...he belongs to us, and we shared him with everyone else."

The first moment of tribute came in the form of a performance by the reunited New Edition (featuring all six members), performing the Jackson 5 classics "I Want You Back," (featuring Ralph Tresvant on leads), "ABC" (featuring Ralph and Bobby Brown), and "The Love You Save" (featuring Ralph and Ricky Bell). Johnny Gill sported a guitar, in tribute to Tito Jackson.

You can watch the New Edition tribute performance
[[HERE]]

Other moments of tribute included an admirable performance by Ne-Yo of Michael Jackson's "Lady In My Life" which you can watch [[HERE]] and a heartfelt performance by Ne-yo and host Jamie Foxx of "I'll Be There," which was preceded by a poignant speech from Michael's younger sister and superstar in her own right, Janet Jackson.

One of the biggest surprises of the night for regular visitors of NJS4Ever and lovers of New Jack Swing was an "old school" set featuring Keith Sweat, Guy, and Bell Biv Devoe. While Keith Sweat mainatained his trademark cool on stage performing "I Want Her,", Guy seemed to attack the stage with a vengeance, with Damion "Crazy Legs" Hall bounding from place to place with the energy of a boxer during a rousing performance of "I Like." Bell Biv Devoe closed out the set with "Poison," while the crowd seemed genuinely excited. Ne-yo joined BBD near the end, and sang the final chorus of the song. When all was said and done, the New Jack Swing set received a standing ovation.

You can watch the New Jack Swing set [[HERE]]

Other notable performances included Beyonce (in an amazingly artistic performance of "Ave Maria" and Sarah McLachlan's "Angel"), The O'Jays, and a three-way performance by Johnny Gill, Tre Songz, and Tyrese.

If you get a chance to catch the BET Awards on television, it is HIGHLY recommended you do so, if you are a fan of New Jack Swing or Michael Jackson.

The Launch of NYC's New Jack Sweetie Entertainment
June 24th, 2009

Lanell Gardenhire, aka The New Jack Sweetie has been an associate of NJS4Ever for a number of years and is striking out on her own to formalize her dedication to this genre of music in the form of her own company, which we will most likely be working with in the near future. Some of you may remember New Jack Sweetie as the young woman who danced with Jeff Redd during his performance of "I Found Lovin'" at NJS4Ever's 20th Anniversary of New Jack Swing party at Club Lotus in NYC (co-hosted by Barry Michael Cooper and Nelson George). (Click "Jeff Redd" to watch)

Well, that new company is called New Jack Sweetie Entertainment, and its launch party will be taking place THIS THURSDAY at:

NEGRIL VILLAGE
70 WEST 3RD STREET
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
(Manhattan lower east side)
6PM-1AM

In addition to getting a chance to get down to some New Jack Swing music, Andrew Knyte will be in attendance, and everyone is more than welcome to get down and celebrate the launch of  this new venture!

Beforehand, Knyte got a chance to sit down with Lanell and ask a few questions about NJS Entertainment. We're posting it for you now to learn more about New York's newest events company!

NJS4E: What is New Jack Sweetie Entertainment?

The sole purpose of New Jack Sweetie Entertainment is to plan and promote events with an Old School and New Jack Swing theme. We’re not just about parties. I also plan and promote comedy shows, basketball games, and various fundraising events. I have a very deep love for the New Jack Swing Era as well as 80’s music, Post New Jack Swing, Hip Hop Soul, Golden Age of Hip Hop and 90’s R&B. I’m highly disappointed in today’s music and I want to be able to give parties and events that will leave a lasting impression on everyone who has grown up during the 80’s and the 90’s. A portion of the proceeds of every event will be donated to a charity or a non-profit organization. I’m all about promoting positivity with great music and community service.

NJS4E: What inspired you to create it?

Believe it or not, it all started with my New Jack Swing 30th Birthday Bash that had taken place in 2008. Many of the vendors thought that I was a promoter that night and some of my friends had encouraged me to plan and promote Old School and New Jack Swing parties and events on a regular basis. That idea had really hit home with me because shortly thereafter I had thought of a ton of ideas for events! LOL! I’m very good at planning theme parties and I absolutely love the New Jack Swing Era, so I thought that I can use my talents in a beneficial way.

NJS4E: What events do you have planned for 2009 and beyond?

The launch party for New Jack Sweetie Entertainment will take place on June 25, 2009. My first major event will be the First Annual New Jack Swing Basketball Fundraiser Game and that will take place on August 1, 2009. For the month of September, I would like to plan a comedy show and in October I would like to plan a party with an Old School/New Jack Swing theme. I would also like to plan a fundraiser dance party for the end of 2009. The ideas are still coming so I’ll constantly be updating my followers.

NJS4E: Are you looking for people to help out?

I am ALWAYS looking for people to help out! LOL! In all seriousness, I’m always open to suggestions, volunteers or anything else that will benefit New Jack Sweetie Entertainment in any way.

NJS4E: What are your favorite New Jack Swing songs?

Wow! That’s a tough question because I love so many New Jack Swing songs. “New Jack Swing” by Wrecks N’ Effect is truly “the anthem” and I will ALWAYS love that song! I can honestly say that the Teddy Riley Remix to Jane Childs’ “I Don’t Wanna Fall In Love” is very memorable because I danced with my father to that song at one of the first “grown-up” parties that I had attended when I was 12 years old. It was at my grandmother’s Eastern Star chapter dance and my dad and I just had so much fun dancing to that song! I also love the remix to “If I’m Not Your Lover” by Al B. Sure! I remember when Guy came out with “Groove Me” and I couldn’t get enough of that song! New Edition’s remix to “N.E Heartbreak” was (and still is) the truth! “On Our Own” by Bobby Brown is still hot! I will always love “Ain’t My Type of Hype” by Full Force! On my 12th birthday, in 1990, my mom had taken me to see House Party and to this day my most favorite scene is that dance-off scene! Of course “Poison” by BBD is a long time favorite of mine! There are so many more but I’ll stop here because I’ll be posting songs all day! LOL!!

NJS4E: What was your favorite New Jack Swing concert?

Hands down, The N.E. Heartbreak Tour with New Edition, Bobby Brown, and Al B. Sure!! I was only about 10 or 11 years old at the time and I couldn’t wait to go to school to tell all of my friends! You know they were jealous! LOL! The concert was GREAT and New Edition stole the show!!! I will never, ever forget that concert! Heavy D. and The Boyz were there along with the Gyrlz and I loved both groups!

NJS4E: Is there anything else you wanted to add that we didn't ask you?

Don’t forget to check me out at www.newjacksweetie.com. I’ll be promoting my events on the site and I’ll also promote other events given by artists and promoters that have an Old School flair!

New Ginuwine featuring Timbaland and Missy - First Listen
June 12th, 2009

With Ginuwine's new album coming out within the next two weeks (June 23rd), his management (Kedar Entertainment) seems to be pulling out all the stops to ensure that the project is a success. And it seems Ginuwine has been able to have two of his friends from DeVante Swing's legendary Da Bassment crew join him for this go' round. That's right - Timbaland and Missy Elliott have joined Ginuwine on this bouncy, potential next single from Ginuwine's album entitled "Get Involved."

Let us know what you think of it and we'll make sure his management knows what you think. Admittedly, the track is a bit more on the pop side, is thankfully devoid of any autotune, and sounds like a younger sibling of "SexyBack" and "The Way I Are."

Click the flash player below (of course, after pressing "pause" on the Al B. Sure! album sampler).

Check, Check, Check it Out............

NJS4Ever Unreleased Flashbacks: Bobby Brown, Randy Gill, Jasmine Guy, D'zo and Raab
June 12th, 2009

In this large entry of media updates, we're sharing a number of items that we have had in our vaults, but have yet to emerge for viewing by the internet viewing public until today. First up is a re-edited recap of NJS4Ever's interview with Bobby Brown, featuring intro and outro commentary from Andrew Knyte and JOe Decidal, along with brief concert clips, pre-and post-stage footage, and highlights from our conversation with Bobby. It's a fairly quick view at under 10 minutes, but does a nice job of capturing the essence of that evening in the dead of Chicago's merciless winter.

NJS4E Interviews Bobby Brown: The Recap (watch now!)

Next up is straight from London in late 2007, when JOe Decidal caught up with Daryl "D'zo" Adams, former lead singer of New Jack Swing stalwarts Basic Black and Hip-Hop/Soul act 911. As some of you might know, Daryl Adams was one of the two male backup singers for Pop superstar Justin Timberlake on his tremendously successful FutureSexLoveShow. And as an added surprise, JOe Decidal was also able to catch up with Rob "Raab" Stevenson, another member of 911 and the other male backup singer for Justin Timberlake's tour.

NJS4Ever interviews D'zo and Raab of Basic Black/911/Justin Timberlake - (Watch now!)

We head back to Chicago for our conversation with Randy Gill, younger brother of Johnny Gill and member of early to mid '90s group II D Xtreme. Randy's appearance was a surprise since Chicago was also already playing host to Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, and Boyz II Men that night, so to see Randy was a nice touch. After chatting with Randy Gill, we can confirm that he is easily one of the nicest artists we have run into over the years and we continue to wish him all the best in his music endeavors.

NJS4Ever Interviews Randy Gill of II D Extreme (watch now!)

Lastly, but certainly not in the least, we are unearthing a live performance (audio only) of Jasmine Guy at Summer Jam 1991 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA (San Francisco Bay Area). It remains a mystery as to why Jasmine Guy only released one album when all three singles ("Try Me," "Another Like My Lover," and "Just Want To Hold You") were well received commercially, and had production by Full Force and Oliver Lieber (Paula Adbul). Because of this, there is VERY little media available on Jasmine Guy's music career beyond her music videos, so this live performance with band should be a welcome treat for any fans of her sole album, released at the end of 1990 and celebrated throughout 1991.

NJS4Ever Presents: Jasmine Guy (live performance - audio only) - (watch now!)

We hope you've enjoyed all of these updates. And there's more on the way. Always. You know how we do! This is NJS4Ever.

NJS4Ever interviews Clinton "Buddy" Wike Jr of Intro and DJ David Wynn (NJS Productions)
June 10th, 2009

This Spring during JOe Decidal's time in the Big Apple, NJS4Ever was able to conduct special interviews with those who helped make the entire New Jack Swing Era possible. First up is Clinton "Buddy" Wike Jr, one third of the legendary Hip-Hop/Soul trio Intro. Buddy, along with Jeff Sanders (whom we interviewed a mere days before) and newcomer Jon Williams are in the process of reforming the group - and in this interview you will hear piano renditions of some of the new material being created for the project.

DJ David Wynn played a substantial role in the NJS Productions story, as a producer on songs such as "Rumpshaker" by Wreckx N Effect and "Good Life" by BLACKstreet. David Wynn also worked on tracks such as Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock's "It Takes Two," and Hi-Five's "I Just Cant' Handle It," solidifying his role as one of the notable talents who helped Teddy Riley create a movement with the New Jack Swing genre. And now for the first time, David shares his story - with a little help from Allen "Big Al" Davidson, cousin of Aqil Davidson of Wreckx N Effect.

NJS4E Interviews Jeff Sanders of Intro and Grammy Winner Gordon Chambers
June 3rd, 2009

JOe Decidal
of NJS4Ever sits down with Jeff Sanders of Intro and Grammy award winning songwriter Gordon Chambers during his visit to New York City during the spring of 2009. In our interview with Jeff, the origins of Intro are revealed. In our interview with Gordon Chambers, we get to learn a bit more about how he was inspired to sing in addition to writing and producing, by personal encouragement by none other than Whitney Houston.

About Jeff Sanders: Jeff Sanders is one third of the 90s hip-hop/soul trio, Intro. Scoring a number of hits, specifically "Love Thang," "Ribbon In The Sky," "Come Inside" and "Let Me Be The One," Intro was a group that like Jodeci, took hip hop beats and adorned them with impressive vocals. The group is in the midst of a reformation (minus the late Kenny Greene, who died of AIDS complications in 2001).

About Gordon Chambers:
His best known hits are likely Anita Baker's smash, "I Apologize" and Brownstone's 1995 anthem, "If You Love Me." Chambers has written for many other artists, including Carl Thomas, whose hit "My Valentine" is a Gordon Chambers composition. Gordon is also a singer in his own right, and has music available for purchase at his website, www.gordonchambers.com.

Rest In Peace: Gene Griffin (1944 - 2009)
May 25th, 2009

NJS4Ever.com is saddened to learn that legendary music executive Gene Griffin, perhaps best known for his involment in G.R. Productions (Gene-Riley Productions) which included music by Guy, Wrecks N Effect, Keith Sweat, Bobby Brown, Boy George, Heavy D and more throughout the late 1980s, passed away early Sunday morning in Atlanta, GA. Griffin was battling Alzheimer's Disease.

For those who may not be aware, the Georgia born Gene Griffin's first major success in music on his Sounds of New York label was the late-era disco track, "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life," by InDeep. After that success, Gene then turned his attention to Kids At Work, the group that featured Teddy Riley which would later morph into Guy (it featured future one-time Guy member Timmy Gatling, and Clurel Henderson).

It has been said that Griffin played a major role in Teddy Riley's early success, instilling the discipline and financial support needed to cultivate Teddy's undeniable musical genius. NJS4Ever.com will report more details concerning this sad news as it unfolds.

In the meantime, you can learn more about Gene Griffin here.

The Future: New Jack Chronicles #2
May 17th, 2009

Ladies and Gents, here comes the 2nd installment of The New Jack Chronicles by Terrence "Big T" Bolden. Enjoy! - Andrew Knyte

The importance of The New Jack Swing is more than just a "FAD" as some music enthusiasts might have you believing; this was a monumental movement, a left shift from the norm that was going on in music then.

Let's face it, where was music headed after the Disco era died out? The Funk genre started making a little noise, such as music by Prince, The Time, Parliament Funkadelic, Roger and Zapp, Cameo, and Loose Ends in the U.K. As a whole, that so called grown and sexy music, "Rhythm and Blues" really wasn't that attractive anymore.

There was a changing of the guard when Teddy Riley, and Guy were signed to Uptown Records. All of a sudden, the streets were on fire because this "NEW" sound was successfully meshing R&B, and hip-hop. Uptown Records became the epicenter of this earthquake. No matter if it was a pop, hip-hop, or R&B artist, Teddy was knocking out hit after hit effortlessly.

The most famous hip-hop tracks should ring a bell...Doug E. Fresh, and MC Ricky D (aka Slick Rick) with "The Show," Big Daddy Kane's "I Get The Job Done," Heavy D's "We Got Our Own Thang," Kool Moe Dee's "Wild Wild West" and of course WreckX N Effect's 1992 monster smash "Rumpshaker." In R&B you had Keith Sweat's "I Want Her," Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative," Teddy Riley featuring Tammy Lucas on "Is It Good To You," Today with "Why You Gettin Funky On Me," (from the motion picture soundtrack House Party) Michael Jackson's "Remember The Time," Guy's "Groove Me", and Hi-Five's "I Like The Way (Kissing Game)" just to name a select few of the best from that genre.

Along with this success came trouble. Allegedly, when Teddy and Aaron Hall wrote Bobby Brown's mega-hit "My Prerogative," Teddy's then manager Gene Griffin put his name on the writer credits of the song, and $800,000 that was supposed to go to Teddy, went to Gene. This along with other business dealings started causing strife. The straw that broke the camel's back though was the murder of Teddy's half brother, (who was also the DJ for Wrecks N Effect) Brandon "B.Doggs" Mitchell in NYC.

A lawsuit was started against Gene, and Teddy subsequently left G.R. Productions. Gene then released a Atlanta-based quartet in the vein of Guy named Basic Black; This new group's sound was so close to Guy's, that people started calling them Guy clones. The lead singer Darryl "D'zo" Adams has a nice voice, very similar to Aaron Hall's.

One should note that some of those drum patterns on the Basic Black album, and sequences to the keys were already pre-programmed by Teddy Riley. Even more interesting is that Darryl started working in the mid-90's with Blackstreet on the song "Fix" from their second album, Another Level. Teddy was set to sign, and produce a new group called 911 headed by Darryl, but Teddy's Lil Man Records folded, and only 2 songs from 911 ever surfaced called "In A Magazine," and "Cutie," both produced by Teddy.

Teddy Riley chose to move to Virginia Beach, VA in the latter part of 1990, and had the construction of Future Records started. Around this time, Guy's second album The Future had dropped, and before the end of 1991, the group disbanded citing creative, and financial differences. Rumors abound that one of the reasons was because of the way the movie soundtrack listing from Do The Right Thing had Guy's hit song "My Fantasy" listed as Teddy Riley featuring GUY.

In 1991 when I met Teddy, he was very happy to be in Virginia. He was enjoying the success of a series of remixes he did for pop artist Jane Child's massive hit "Don't Wanna Fall In Love." This resulted in his phone starting to ring off the hook like it did in the late '80s.

In 1992, a crew of about 8 guys including me, were in the studio while Wreckx N Effect (Note the X in the spelling of WreckX, to symbolize the loss of Brandon Mitchell) doing verses to the "Rumpshaker" remix. The "NJS Gang" was what we were dubbed by Teddy. Some of the guys were from NYC, and some from VA. We were having a great time. Maxi-singles of those sessions are still available on the internet.

A friend of mine used to go to the studio with me from time to time, his name was Kendu, and he had a nice reggae style tone to his raps, real gruff. Kendu was the star of the crew, and all of a sudden, the versions of "Rumpshaker" with his voice was booming across the radio all up, and down the East Coast. This was the "Rumpshaker" remix with a reggae rapper on it. Kendu started touring with WNE, and Teddy Riley, even appearing on the The Arsenio Hall Show, and on Soul Train to perform "Rumpshaker" with his reggae rap mixed in. Subsequently, this led to his arrest because he was on probation in Virginia, and not allowed to leave the state.

Also what's interesting is Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes was sitting in with us, working on the boards one time when I was there, and if I remember correctly, he wrote, and did some producing on "Rump Shaker" too. (Editor's Note: Pharrell wrote Teddy Riley's rap verse) We were winning at this time.

Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston came to VA at this time, rented a black Porche, and drove right up to the studio, and parked right next to T.R. Teddy immediately started working with him, and had his new group Blackstreet do background vocals on Bobby's music. The lead singer of the group was Joseph Stonestreet, a very good humored guy, and we were close. His then fiancee Karen Anderson was a singer and songwriter; we vowed to work on each other's solo projects. (In later years, Karen went on to record with Jay-z, Tyrese, Faith Evans, Missy Elliott, LSG, and of course Blackstreet. There will be more on my good friend later).

This is just a breakdown on the history of the happenings going on in, and around Future Records circa the early 90's. I promise you more to come...stay with me. Shout out to Knyte for giving me the opportunity to share these experiences with you. Peace, and God Bless.

Nasri Atweh: The "New Kid" On The Block
May 5th, 2009

How often does one song set off a full-length tour and reunion for one of the best selling American pop groups ever? Not that often. But in Nasri’s case, it proved to do just that. It was the song Click Click Click that kicked everything off for the Toronto-native, where New Kids On The Block member, Donnie Wahlberg, stumbled across his demo including that one song written, produced (along with Hakim Abdulsamad - formerly of The Boys) and recorded by Nasri himself.

From then onwards, Nasri lent his writing and production skills to NKOTB’s album The Block, including its first hit single "Summertime," alongside "Stare At You" and "One Song." The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart, securing the group’s comeback as a success since their last studio release 14 years ago with New Jack-influenced Face The Music.

As a singer in his own right, Nasri showcases his many talents with smooth vocal capabilities as well as creating heartfelt songs with lyrical creativity (something that is lacking in today’s mainstream music), which is found in his songs "Not The Same" and "Sistah Soldier."

The Future: New Jack Chronicles
May 5th, 2009

Editor's Note: We're going to try something a little different at NJS4EVER moving forward - and we are going to see how this goes. A friend of Teddy Riley himself, named Terrence "Big T" Bolden has offered to share his own experiences in regard to New Jack Swing music and the New Jack Era with NJS4EVER. We've given Big T his own column, and it will be called "The Future: New Jack Chronicles." Look forward to further entries featuring musicians and artists who worked with Teddy Riley such as Tammy Lucas and Queen Pen, as well as personal stories from Big T himself, who contributed a rap verse to the remix of Wreckx N Effect's "Wreck Shop."

Without further adieu, here is the first installment of Big T's "The Future: New Jack Chronicles."

- Andrew Knyte

It is very important to keep in mind that this is more than just "reference" music, this is more than just "baby-making music", this is a art. The "ART" I am referring to is simply "THE NEW JACK SWING." I am proud to have witnessed the pioneer, the legend himself, hard at work a many nights, (and some days) at his now burned down former studio in Virginia Beach, on Virginia Blvd, right down the street from Princess Anne High School, (note: the same high school that The Neptunes went to) and Penbroke Mall.

Teddy Riley is a very efficient producer who does not like to waste time. His favorite time to record music used to be late night, but there were times during the day I would see him drive up to the studio. Teddy is a multi-instrumentalist. He can play several instruments including the guitar, and drums. In a recording session, he is kind of short tempered, I am so serious, he will stop the music from recording, and tell you something like, "nah thats not it, I need more feeling, you got to feel it, try it again."

The recording process can be nerve racking if you are not built for this. The edge that you have with NJS, is that it is the forebearer of all that you hear now. Need proof? Jermaine Dupri, R. Kelly, Babyface, Rodney Jenkins-(Darkchild), yours truly Big T, and the list goes on, and on of the producers who say that Teddy inspired them to some point. By the way, Timbaland, and The Neptunes were also heavily influenced by Teddy Riley. Teddy discovered The Neptunes at a talent show at their school in 1991. More to come....these are just my thoughts to get this thing started...

Lady Gaga: The New Jack Swing Connection
May 4th, 2009

Betcha didn't know this! The man whom current pop music phenom Lady Gaga says "discovered" her is none other than Vincent Herbert, one of the 3 Boyz From Newark producers who were behind hits and remixes for New Jack/Hip-Hop Soul artists such as Toni Braxton and Babyface ("Give U My Heart,"), Aaliyah ("Choosey Lover"), Bobby Brown ("That's The Way Love Is"),and later on with Destiny's Child ("No, No, No").

While one time production partner Rob Fusari (whom Herbert took under his wings upon hearing Fusari's music that formed the basis of Destiny's Child's "No, No, No") usually gets the credit for discovering Lady Gaga, and did indeed name her, Gaga also credits Herbert for seeing the talent in her that would spawn hits such as last year's "Let's Dance" and "Poker Face." Fusari brought Gaga to Herbert's attention, and the rest is history.

It's interesting to note that while New Jack Swing is certainy a niche genre, the producers and songwriters behind it are able to craft and/or enable product that generates substantial impact on the pop charts. Whether we are talking about Hakim Abdulsahmad (NKOTB), Vincent Herbert (Lady Gaga) or Full Force (Backstreet Boys), the connection is undeniable. And whether or not mainstream media tells the whole story, you'll be able to uncover these interesting nuggets of information moving forward at Njs4ever.com.

Check out Lady Gaga and the obviously shy Vincent Herbert in action here as they visit KIIS-FM in Los Angeles last year (watch now!)

The Death of Adam: 88 Keys
April 17th, 2009

About 2 years ago, I met 88 Keys. It was on a tour bus, outside the NorVa, after Common's show. A few roadies, promoters, friends, and fans had rounded up for laughs, conversation, and a briefing of the night's itenerary. As I took a seat, I noticed next to me, a young man intently staring from behind a pair of black wire frame glasses into his laptop. He was scrolling through and clicking various picture and audio files. After a few moments of formal introductions, he looked up, apologetically excusing himself for his preoccupation, politely extending his hand and introducing himself. Once he began to speak, I found myself drawn to his story. He was the kind of person that seemed so familiar, you would swear you have met before. The atmosphere was so candid and engaging I felt as if I was talking to an old friend.

He spoke of his West African ancestry and growing up with hip-hop in Long Island, New York, while he proudly showed pictures of his wife and children, mother and father, sisters and brothers and close friend Kanye West. He named classics like De La  Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising as inspiration,  of unenthusiatic parents who did not understand his new found muse, his dropping out of college to pursue it and the internship where he met hip-hop legends like Q-Tip, Pete Rock, and the Large Professor which lead to that fateful decision and his unusual moniker. I knew I was in the midst of something truly extraordinary.

Which is why, I was not surprised when  the next thing he told me was that  he was an MC, although moments before this conversation began I would have never guessed. He then grabbed a set of headphones and plugged them into his laptop. As I adjusted them, he adjusted the volume and pressed play. What unfolded was the misadventures of man, in life and the pursuit of happiness told in an ingeniusly humurous and colorful perspective aptly entitled The Death of Adam. As the music played, he lead me click by click through his album's layout which looked more like crime scene photos and evidence. Track by track, he made the case for the not-so dearly departed fictional character of Adam, and the events leading to his untimely demise.

As the story goes, Adam wakes up and finds himself in a "compromising position" that leads to Adam being found a long way from Eden, murdered in a loft in Harlem. The Death of Adam is the modern adaptation of the "Fall Of Man" biblical story,  and the man behind the music that will definitely take its place among hip-hop's noteworthy concept albums.

After working with artists such as The Pharcyde, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Consequence and Macy Gray, the debut album from 88 Keys was released in November 2008. It features Kanye West on the single "Stay Up (Viagra)". The video for this single,  inspired my writing this piece because I  simply enjoyed watching this concept finally come to life,  in the two mischievous old men played by Kanye West and 88 Keys, armed with a bottle of Viagra and two hot young dates, ready to prove to the world they're up for any challenge, even if it almost kills them.

The album also features Phonte of Little Brother, Redman, Kid Cudi, J*Davey, Bilal and Shitake Monkey with cameos from Q-Tip and Consequence. It was followed up by Adam's Case  Files...The Mixtape in August of last year.

Michael Bivins Talent Search 2009
April 15th, 2009

Michael Bivins, a.k.a. the "BIV" from Bell Biv DeVoe, or more lately among his legions of (particularly female) New Edition fans, "Sporty Rich," is embarking on a national tour to find the next crop of young talent. While it's no secret to those of us who can remember that before Murder Inc, Bad Boy, Ruff Ryders, Cash Money or even Ryan Leslie's Next Selection, there was the original "squad" - which was The East Coast Family, on Biv 10 Records (think of the lyrics: "Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD, The East Coast Family," from the 1991 Boyz II Men smash, "Motownphilly.")

Having just left Washington DC on earlier this month, and hitting New Jersey this Thursday (which NJS4E may be able to cover), the Mike Biv Talent Search just got its start on March 15th in Pennsylvania, which means many more cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and Oakland, CA may be in store! If anyone has any doubts about Michael Bivins' track record as a talent scout, we can go over some history....

In 1991, Biv unleashed the first group off of his Biv 10 imprint, Another Bad Creation that went on to score two smash hits, "Iesha" and "Playground." Biv followed that up with Boyz II Men's Cooleyhighharmony album - need we say more? We shall. MC Brains followed after that with the hits "Ooochie Coochie" and "Brainstormin'," followed about two years later with Chicago group Subway ("This Lil Game We Play") and 702 after that. Then, by 1996, Biv was back with New Edition, and has seemed to focus his energies on that effort up until very recently (amid the "break-up" controversy that first surfaced in Ricky Bell's interview on RollingOut.com, which you can view by clicking here. Last but not least, Biv also played a role in the formation and development of  Diddy's Bad Boy boyband, Day 26!

At any rate, to learn more about the talent search, be sure to regularly visit the official Sporty Rich page (here). You can also follow the talent search on Twitter (here).

Flashback: Troop performs "Sweet November" - 1992
April 13th, 2009

Picking up where we left off from last week with our presentation of Hi-Five performing "I Like The Way" at Summer Jam 1991, we're fast forwarding to Summer Jam 1992 for the last song performed by R&B quintet Troop that August. Entitled "Sweet November," this song was originally recorded by The Deele, and written by one of its most famous alumni, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. There is more live audio in store - it is old (nearly 20 years!) but we hope you can appreciate the memories....or for our younger readers...the history.

Can anyone hear the Jacksons' reference in this version of the song? Here's a hint: It came from their 1978 Epic Records debut, Destiny.

Electrik Red
April 13th, 2009

New R&B girl group, Electrik Red, are set to release their debut CD entitled How To Be A Lady Vol.1 on April 21st. The album's title presents a twist on words as the L.A.-based quartet sets aside conventional ideas on how to be a lady and instead, represents ladies who know what they want and how to get it their way. Signed to Def Jam Recordings, Electrik Red are ready to set new trends in the industry with their edgy, gutsy lyrics, sleek moves and fashion-forward sense of style.

The-Dream took the group under his wings and lent his talents by writing and producing the upcoming album with Tricky who was also on board with the project. It’s been a long time coming for the members of Electrik Red as they had all started out as dancers, touring with artists such as Usher, Janet Jackson and Ciara. But now it is their time to shine under the spotlight as the 4-piece group will be hitting the road with Lil Wayne. Electrik Red have already put out two singles including the hard hitting "Drink In My Cup," and the sassy "So Good." These bad girls of urban pop will be sure to reinvent the meaning of girl power with their edgy prowess by pushing the boundaries on How to be a lady Vo1.1

Keep It On The Hush: New Albums by Guy and Today expected in 2009
April 10th 2009

In recent weeks, Njs4ever has had access to some very interesting information. On our Facebook group, we alluded to the re-emergence of a 90s group with a new member who used to be a solo artist. We wanted so badly to be able to tell you, but we've been asked to keep that on the hush. That said, we have finally been given permission to share the following: Guy will indeed be releasing a new album in 2009, and this fact has been personally confirmed by both Teddy Riley and Damion Hall. And in a related turn of events, Big Bub has reunited with his former bandmates,  and Today will also be releasing a new album in 2009.

There's more news - and we may be able to share it this weekend or in the coming months. But please believe it when we say that we will not be scooped. You'll find out about more developments involving alumni from the New Jack Swing Era here first!

Bow Wow presents New Jack City II: Is this the real deal?
April 10th, 2009

If you are still listening to today's new music, by now you have probably heard that new rap song that samples TLC's "Baby Baby Baby" from their 1992 debut album, Ooooh, On The TLC Tip. And if you are anything like this writer, at first you wondered to yourself whether or not it was too soon to sample this record, until you realized that "Baby Baby Baby" is now 17 years old. So...if you vividly remember when the original song was a hit during the summer of 1992, that my friend, means you are officially old.

And if you are anything like this writer, you did some investigating, and found out that this song, "You Can Get It All," was recorded by none other than Bow Wow, kid rapper turned adult rapper over the last few years. And his new album title seems to pay tribute to the New Jack Era, as it is entitled New Jack City II. Upon reviewing the album, there is only one other song on the record that seems to stay in theme with a "new jack" album, and that is "She's My," which borrows it's hook melody from Bobby Brown's "Roni" from 1988's groundbreaking album, Don't Be Cruel.

Editor's Note: It is interesting that both "New Jack" samples from this album were based on compositions by L.A. & Babyface, as opposed to Teddy Riley, the undisputed creator of New Jack Swing music.

You can watch the video (and hear the song) "You Can Get It All," (here)

What do you think of the song? Or what Bow Wow is trying to do?
