There is a very STRONG possibility that in the near future NJS4E will be interviewing the founder of Uptown Records, the epicenter of New Jack Swing, the one and only Mr. Andre Harrell!
Currently, you can see Andre as one of the mentor/judges on ABC Television's latest summer music contest, The One which can be best described as another take on the concept popularized by Pop Idol and
American Idol.

The First New Jack Swing-oriented novel?

On June 27th of this year, one of the first (if not the first) New Jack Swing-themed novels ever published was released. This book is entitled
The Fever. It is told from the perspective of Dark, a manager who discovers fictional singer Brian Barnes and goes out on the road with him in 1990 during one of the peak years of the New Jack Swing Era. While this novel is definitely a page turner for those curious about the music industry and how deals get made, it should be strongly mentioned that this is a racy novel! If The Fever were ever made into a film, it would easily be rated NC-17 if not unrated altogether. In this story, the "music" in the word "music business" definitely takes a back seat to "business" and sex.

If you don't mind reading through some very explicit sex scenes, The Fever makes for an easy and entertaining read. But if you are looking for a novel dripping with love for music, you might be better off with another book entitled Just Say No! by Omar Tyree, pictured below.

With mentions of TLC, Boyz II Men, and New Edition, Just Say No! is an earlier-written story of two friends who rose from obscurity to the top of the charts, and then personal tragedy and heartbreak. Recommended to anyone who likes to read and thoroughly enjoys R&B/Soul music.

More updates to come this week!

NJS4E received a **very special message** this week.

It came from none other than Barry Michael Cooper,
the writer who originally coined the term "New Jack Swing,"
and wrote the screenplay to the films
Sugar Hill, Above The Rim,
and New Jack City!

Click here to own a piece of music history - a copy of the 1988 Village Voice article
in which the term "New Jack Swing" was evoked for the very first time!

The following is the letter we received from Mr. Cooper - for all of you to enjoy:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

12 Feb 06

- Barry Michael Cooper -

Greetings

I was googling my name, and I came upon your website. I admire your passion about
the music Teddy Riley created, and that I named in an article for the Village Voice almost
20 years ago (October 18th, 1988 to be exact) titled "TEDDY RILEY'S NEW JACK SWING:
Harlem Gangsters Raise A Genius," written by me, Barry Michael Cooper. I love and
respect Teddy, but I coined that name, and now, if you go to this
site
it comes right out
of the Maestro's mouth himself. He gives credit where credit is due.

I usually keep a VERY low profile, and don't like the spotlight, but I have observed on more
than a few sites (and encyclopedia links) the terminology "debate," "according to legend"
or words to that effect, as if there is some dispute on who coined the term. Click on the link
above, and also get the hop hop journalism anthology,
And It Don't Stop that was
published last year, and you can read my Village Voice piece in its entirety.

I appreciate the fact that your site has kept the spirit of this music -- that COMPLETELY
changed the landscape of not only Soul, R&B, and Hip Hop, but it redefined Pop music
(and the culture that supports it) as we know it -- alive. Teddy was then as he is now,
a forward thinking genius and musical maverick who played the game by his own rules.
He is a modern day Mozart and we who love modern music are the better for it.
I was blessed to make his acquaintance back in late August/early September of 1988
when I researched the story, and hung out with Teddy and his then manager, the
notorious "Georgia Gene Griffin."

However, it was an eye opener -- to say the least -- to watch this guy in the studio,
playing the keyboards like Herbie Hancock, multi-tasking various instruments like Prince,
and mentoring a then 19 or 20 year-old Devante Swing at the recording complex that was
in the basement of the once infamous disco Studio 54. Even then Teddy was a futurist,
because he had a $100,000 home studio which he designed and hired a Japanese firm
to build it for him (in his luxury condo in the Riverdale section if the Bronx; think
Beverly Hills in NYC's third largest borough) that used a tape-less system of floppy discs
to record his masterpiece, before transferring the audio to DAT tapes to master his
records...and don't forget, this was 20 years ago! If I remember correctly, the day
I was there, Teddy was working on a track for Stephanie Mills called "Fast Talk," that
became a hit for her. It was right then and there I knew I was looking at the future when
I was watching this guy.

Keep up the great work. By the way, I am working on the autobiography of Andre Harrell,
who has nothing but great things to say about Teddy in his book. God Willing, it should be
out sometime next year. I hope your readers and the lovers of NJS on your site will
go out and buy the book!

God Bless.

Peace,

Barry Michael Cooper

WELCOME TO NJS4E: 3.0!

- Knyte-

The Situation:

We're finally here. After nearly 30 days offline, NJS4E is back.

There have been some good things...and there have been some not-so-good developments.

Let's start with the not-so-good:

All of the posts between late March thru 11/2/05 (when we got hacked) are gone. Forever.
It was a case of Murphy's Law to the extreme: at almost every turn.
Everything that could have gone wrong with the forum recovery did just that.
It went wrong.

1. The latest backup we made was incomplete. Only a third of the database was backed up.
A complete (and unexpected) malfunction in the backup process.

2. Until now (obviously), we had been backing up over previous files. Had we not been doing that,
perhaps we could have gone back to the immediately previous version which was likely un-corrupted.

3. Our webhost in this one instance was not able to restore the files like they are usually able to.

--------------------------------------------------------------

For me, this has been a tremendously heartbreaking experience, and easily the most difficult
period I have ever faced with NJS4E so far. So much was lost. It was my worst fear come true.

In the months since the latest backup (which we plan to extensively commemorate), so many positive things
had happened with the NJS4E online community. What was once a quiet community began to
buzz with a vibrancy and passion frankly unrivaled in the world of urban cyberspace.

We were, and hopefully will continue to be an international community filled to the brim with
goodwill, integrity, spirit and fellowship towards each other, and the artists, producers, musicians,
promoters, engineers, executives, and everyone else who helped to make the New Jack Swing
Era (the music *and* the movement) happen.

We saw the likes of Jodecidal (The Initiator), who made the first ever NJS4E Party happen
at The Fine Line in London. It was a truly magical thing to be a part of for everyone who
attended, and it was truly my pleasure to address those in attendance on that unforgettable evening.
Even Teddy Riley got involved, sending his well wishes as well.

NJS West - our Californian production arm was formed...and the dynamic duo of Jack and ZappMan
made it possible for a great deal of our growth to happen. Jodecidal, NJS West, and myself attended
the Los Angeles stop of the Body & Soul Tour (featuring Johnny Gill, Blackstreet, Guy, Bell Biv Devoe,
and K-Ci & JoJo) and ended up eating dinner with Teddy himself later that night. It was a surreal
weekend in every sense of the word. And we shared all of it at the message board.

We saw classic threads by the likes of Swingbeatlover (The Passionate One), Tim Partridge
(The Critic), the arrival of "obscure" music experts like Justvox, and then later Mr VIP,
AsianNewJackKid, Pretty Grey Eyez, Jada, Musicdaughter, Ultimate Divax, Fred E,
and
so many more.

Who can forget the build-up threads to the parties? Comical moments like the titanic duel between
Bootknockalizer and Tim P over the color of The Hulk's shorts? We had new sections...like
"But Seriously..." and the "Random" sections had really grown and displayed just how
varied and well-rounded this place was becoming.

We had "NJS4E muppets." We had the 2nd NJS4E party, featuring special guests:
the ladies of Divazz Entertainment!

We had "Guess the Mystery DJ." We had the "NJS4E Top 50" thanks to DJ Freez'.
We had "Let's Count To A Million -- In Words," started by 97sbrown2,
(The Boy Wonder). Favorite movies, NJS4E Unplugged, and excellent threads about so many artists.
There was so much KNOWLEDGE captured on our forum. It was collective. It was massive. It was superb.

...And I am sure there were many PMs from that period we all kept for sentimental reasons...

...

So in honor of all this...and so much more...we are going to memorialize the missing posts.
The lost posts. The posts that meant and will forever mean so much to NJS4E.
We have caches. There are many posts that will be restored and put on display here
on the main site as reminders of how far we had come. And they will serve as indicators
of how far we are going to go.

We are in a rebuilding process now.
We will go on.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a change...but it is up to us to define what this change means.
After mourning the loss of 10 months' worth of posts...I have decided to look forward.
It hasn't been easy...and I don't expect it to be easy for most of you.
But please feel free to share your thoughts with me, or amongst yourselves.

The usual suspects - Stevieswing (The Spirit), DJ Freez' (The Cool One), Mello75 (The First Lady)
Dan (The Serious One), K-Bee, and I'm sure many of the other heavyweights @ NJS4E are available
to discuss this with. And myself too.

The Future:

I can assure you that steps have been taken to ensure that a loss like this *never* happens again.

1. The Message Board is now on a new server, courtesy of Matt Conway, a friend of Stevieswing and
co-administrator of www.Soul2Street.com. Matt played an enormous role in restoring what we could
of the NJS4E Message Board. I am personally very grateful to the assistance he has provided,
the hours we put in trying to salvage as much as we could, and his gracious offer to host the
Message Board because he believed in what NJS4E is about. Not only is his server backed up every day,
but we will be backing it up daily as well. We will never be without backups (separate ones too, no
longer saved over each other) again.

2. We will always be running the very latest version of phpBB -- the forum software that NJS4E is
running with at this time. The Message Board was able to be hacked because we were not running
the most up-to-date version. We will never fail to upgrade ever again.

3. We have broadened the admin responsibilities to include not only myself, but Matt Conway and a
team of others to ensure that the forum is being watched at virtually all times.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to personally thank you all for your patience through this difficult time.
I'd like to thank Stevieswing for hosting the NJS4E refugees (including myself)
at his wonderful message board (and sister site), Soul2Street.com.

Thank you to Jodecidal for being a source of strength through all of this.

Thank you to EVERYONE who made their way to Soul2Street to keep the NJS4E spirit alive.

Now...on to the good things:

1. As you can see...NJS4E has been redesigned and upgraded. We're ready for 2006 and beyond!
Spread the word...NJS4E is back! We're in this for the long haul, and we are more serious than ever!

2. We've added a guestbook. This is the latest version of the Lazarus guestbook software available.
We felt the name "Lazarus" was fitting...we hope you do too.

3. We've added a mailing list -- this time around, you can always be sure to stay in the loop
when it comes to NJS4E!

4. More developments are on the way. Trust us when we say this. Much more.

5. NJS4E WORLDWIDE MEETUP - AMSTERDAM - 2006
We are in the planning stages as we speak.
This is going to be huge.
Trust us.

And of course, if you are in London on 12/3...head to the 3rd NJS4E Party!!!

6. Like the Year By Year History portion of this main site, we are going to create
a Month By Month history of the missing period of the Message Board.
We are going to chronicle this vibrant period with screen shots of what happened
(and yes...we have screen shots of many of those threads) and a summary
of not only what happened each month, but who joined.

We will *not* forget what was taken from us.
We will remember. 4Ever.

----

In closing...thank you all for your support.

We hope you will stick with us. We are not going to slow down.
We are going to trudge forward. There is so much more to gain.
So much more to achieve. So much more to experience.
So much more to celebrate.

Stay tuned.
