: Mint Condition

87Formed in the early '80s under the Prince-influenced Minneapolis sound, this six-member band was headed by lead singer Stokley Williams, whose precision and distinctive tenor surged a calling from new jack moguls Jam & Lewis in '89. With a tweaking of their sound and Jam & Lewis's impressive resume, Mint Condition debuted with a bang in late '91, spinning off two big hits in "Forever In Your Eyes" and "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)." Although the sextet aimed for a new jack identity, their lead single "Are You Free" stalled on the charts. Instead, the public clung to their over-the-top balladry, which is a bit of a disappointment because their new jack portion is stellar.

As a result, the sextet would go on to enjoy massive success on subsequent releases throughout the '90s, mainly on their by-the-book ballads and Stokley's convincing tenor. They would go on to become one of the most successful urban groups of the '90s.
